Class Descriptions

Chinese Brush Painting

Based on the concepts of chi, yin and yang, Asian style brush painting developed over the last 1500 years as one of the most intriguing, thoughtful and expressive ways of painting two-dimensional imagery. There are many more styles and appearances of brush painting than most people realize. Using Sumi-ink and opaque watercolors on rice paper we will explore the materials, the mentality and techniques of Oriental Brush Painting.  The connection of the brush and ink to the paper is both satisfying and challenging. In almost every class you will go home with a beautiful painting, and expand your drawing and painting skills, even if you have never painted or drawn before. Your Subject matter will be either floral or landscape depending on the interests of the class.  Recommended for beginners to more experienced  painters.

Botanical Drawing and Painting

Drawing and Painting from plants, flowers and trees, is the focus of this class. Using a variety of mediums, starting with charcoal, then pen and ink, colored pencil, watercolor and any other mediums you wish to explore, we will practice seeing and translating forms from the plant kingdom into works of art. Working sometimes very loosely and sometimes with close detail, there is an emphasis on understanding what makes a plant or floral image seem alive and natural. Skills in drawing, composition and painting and brush painting are included. Whether you want be able to do field studies or create masterpieces, this class is recommended for beginners through advanced. Individual attention given. Materials discussed in first class meeting. Bring 18 x 24 newsprint. Some classes ay  be held at the Botanical Garden.

Completely Beginning Drawing & Painting  I

Line, shape, form and space are fundamental to drawing just about anything. Different types of perspective, value, texture, shading, composition are some of the foundation skills we learn. A variety of mediums will include charcoal, pencil, pastel, color pencil, tempera, watercolor.  We will work from a different sources including photos, life and imagination. Many supplies are included. Progressive step-by-step information helps you gain a working understanding of the subject. Suitable for those who think they can’t even draw a straight line.

 Watercolor I and II

Exercises from imagination, still life, and photo sources are designed to help you understand materials, paper, paint, brushes, value, tint, tone, shade, the color wheel, color weight, special effects and many other interesting relationships.  For the complete beginner.   In Watercolor II we will continue developing new skill and approaches.

 Independent Projects, Research & Development

This class is open to anyone who has basic drawing skills and a working capacity in any medium. The emphasis will be on exploring personal interests in two-dimensional imagery, researching historical or contemporary models, and developing your own work. Group discussion and critique help to sharpen observations and insight. We will work in class but the ability to work independently is required.

Small, personal classes are informal and informative.
